Our group watching the first Snow Leopard from a knoll above our camp in Hemis National Park. At this very spot, on our first afternoon in the park, and within half an hour of officially beginning our Snow Leopard search, our expert local spotter had exclaimed “ Shan !!” – the Ladakhi name for Snow Leopard.

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!). In Asia they are even commonly kept as pets!

My group watched this leopard walking parallel to the road, then back into the grass, and then–whooop–up a tree, where he relaxed while being watched by people in at least twenty vehicles. The leopards place their kill in a tree, protecting it from poaching by other predators.

This is the place, after all, that people see Sunda Clouded Leopards! Calling loudly overhead were Bornean Black Magpie and Rhinoceros Hornbills , and, at the last moment, we heard Blue-headed Pitta again. Night is for the frogs. We froze, then dashed over to the forest edge. A tick is a tick. This is a place to savour with loved ones.

For 9 months of the year, this great, bellowing herd can be found in the Serengeti and watching the long lines of grunting wildebeest moving across the plains is truly a remarkable experience. Sunset over the Ngorongoro Crater, a sight to behold! Only bull African Elephants reside in the Ngorongoro Crater The birding is equally astounding.
