Bird Banding the Dry Tortugas

The Dry Tortugas National Park is located some 70 miles off of Key West in a small group of keys that makes up the farthest points included in the state of Florida, so it was no surprise that we had a four hour boat ride ahead of us before landing in the park. Banding is best done in teams split into three, potentially four groups.

German Birding Blitz

Once on our own, Jess and I decided to try a fun experiment. From Purple Herons to Little Grebes to Red Kites , the spot also yielded a small group of Eurasian Spoonbills for the area highlight. Soon after I was able to tick the ubiquitous House Sparrow in its native haunts where I was allowed to enjoy it. I was not lead astray.

But time, apparently, heals all wounds, and this August I went back to discover that while Pino Real may never again be what it once was, it is still good.

Maine’s Great Black Hawk – Rescued!

A small group created a semicircle around a bare tree branch, brandishing some of the largest, longest camera lenses I’ve ever seen. The general mood was one of gratitude, and everyone passed camera lenses and binoculars back and forth to share the experience. Luckily, we weren’t the only ones on the look-out.
