In September, I had the fantastic opportunity to travel to an increasingly popular destination for birding: Honduras. In this first installment, I will focus on my impressions and experiences in the highlands portion of our tour. In short, the mountain birding in Honduras promised a slew of cool new birds. The birding around Lago de Yojoa in Honduras is frankly phenomenal, as I learned during a June 2018 birding junket organized by the Instituto Hondureño de Turismo. Nonetheless, a birder’s initial experience in Honduras sets him or her on an inexorable course towards the only species currently named for this gem of a country.

In a little less than two weeks my family and I will be enjoying a long weekend on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. But my experiences in Belize and Honduras give me a good basis in the birds of the region and I have plenty of time to study and learn what to expect with the endemics.
