Birding Ruili, Yunnan

Ruili is a Chinese city right on the border to Myanmar, and a major border crossing. For example, one paper states that in Sri Lanka’s cloud forest, only about 3% of all trees have suitable cavities. It’s a powerful motivator that has attracted millions of people from all around the world to devote time and money to protect these resources.

Do introduced species count?

Even the most free-wheeling of birders don’t usually consider going to a zoo or a chicken farm a form of birding, but just because they choose to distinguish doesn’t mean they keep a list. The birders trying to flush up Yellow Rail is a good example of this. But still, birders generally do want their birds to count.

Most Wanted Birds in Brazil

While it’s no longer possible to see this regal macaw soar gracefully through the Brazilian skies, to be able to worship them—even from afar at one of the conservatories or zoos—would be a dream, at last, come true. I worked with a pair of motmots at a US zoo and fell in love with their vibrant colors and unique tails. Wicked, right?

The Passenger Pigeon & A Message From Martha: One Pigeon, Two Book Reviews

We have photographs and newspaper obituaries of Martha, the last living Passenger Pigeon, who died after a lifetime in captivity, mostly in the Cincinnati Zoo. The chapter on Martha, for example, just shows a close-up of her stuff body–not the whole body, the torso and tail–against an almost-black background. What a horror!
