But Friday, 6 December, was the first day of the African Birding Expo and we knew that sleeping in wasn’t an option because the afternoon would be spent doing expo events and we wanted to get some time to go birding. On the shore of Lake Victoria, the grounds were surprisingly birdy, and we quickly built up a nice checklist.

One of only two species in the plover genus Thinornis , the other being Australia’s Hooded Plover , this species is another New Zealand endemic. Actually, it’s one I originally thought was endemic to the Chatham Islands, a group of islands to the east of the main islands that hosts endemic species like the Black Robin.

eBird calls the species an “attractive terrestrial bird”, though, in the fine print, this praise is limited to the male (“stately male is resplendent”) while the description of the female is far less enthusiastic (“female brown with black striping and gray skin around the eye”). The species also has something of a criminal record – the HBW reports that “Black-throated T**s [have also been] observed to steal nesting material from other species in central China” ( original source ). Taking photos of such a rare species is a bit of a double-edged sword. ” Wow.

As we approach the 100th anniversary of the demise of Martha at the Cincinnati Zoo, one would think that there is little left to say about the prolific life and tragic death of the Passenger Pigeon. ” If the book has a weakness, it is in the final chapter, where the author takes on the current extinction event as a whole.

It is the 100th Anniversary of the extinction of the species known as the Passenger Pigeon and writers are paying attention. We have photographs and newspaper obituaries of Martha, the last living Passenger Pigeon, who died after a lifetime in captivity, mostly in the Cincinnati Zoo. We have a lot of source material.
