We are a far bigger problem on this planet than the (over)population of feral cats, elephants, Canada geese, or any other creature we "manage" or want to manage, "humanely" or otherwise. In my experience there are at least a handful of issues that involve compromise when the idea of veganism collides with real life.

Hard to imagine nowadays, this majestic mountain setting was a major communist guerilla stronghold in the Greek Civil War (1946-1949) and the region is scarred by the events and the memories of them. Feral Pigeon – Columba livia dom. . – the highest in the country. Also, trekking poles proved useful.

In the event I’m in a life or death struggle with an Oregon Junco or a particularly feral Dunnock I’d rather my birding companion was at least nominally on my side. It’s an unnerving experience and not at all pleasant even if the bird doesn’t connect often, and I am no stranger to bird attacks.

It was a startling but forgivable experience, and not nearly as unsettling an attack by nesting goshawks (or so I’ve heard): it seems an encounter with Haviken involves a certain amount of risk in either case. More prominent was the taste of dark, dried fruits like fig and raisins, accompanied by faint touches of toffee sweetness.
