Two hundred yards further, the first Common Goldeneye and Smew started to appear and, while counting Smew and geese, a Great Bittern took flight from one stand of reeds to another, right in front of us. And this one chose to fly right in front of us. It is not an uncommon bird, but being so secretive, I see it only every other year.

Grant and I lived in the family home in 1988 and 1989 when we were working and travelling in Europe whilst they lived in Kuwait, so we are familiar with the area from those days. My parents always enjoyed walks together down the lanes and across the fields in the area and there are many Public Rights of Way including the Nev Cole Way.

I also got to spend a few hours in the Netherlands. Marsh Sandpiper , Den Oever, Netherlands. Hordes of birders from all across Europe went there and got cracking views of this long-staying bird, but I was not one of them due to the distance involved and a lack of time (certainly not a lack of envy and desire).
