Lion – much easier to see than an Aardvark In contrast to East Africa, encounters with mammals while out birding in Europe are relatively few. Over the years, though, I have enjoyed a number of memorable mammal sightings in Europe. I viewed them at dusk, through a telescope, from a ridge overlooking the area they were hunting.

Russia Bans Canadian Seal Imports!

Russia does have its own seal hunt, but apparently they banned killings of animals under one year old. I don't see what they get out of it, unless they want to impress Europe, which has already banned seal products. Russia has been the biggest market for the Canadian seal fur industry. Excerpted from the Globe and Mail.

Freeze-birding down the Danube

A shot or two coming from the opposite bank, but they do not sound like geese shooting – more like boar hunting. A goose hunt sounds like a WWII battle. The only mammals of the day were feral Nutrias (Coypus), aquatic rodents originally from southern South America released from the bankrupt fur-farms and well established here.
