Both animal rights groups and animal welfare groups use "compassion" frequently. I think most would agree with that one, although there is the question of psychological harm, and activists are all over the map with that. First there's "What constitutes psychological harm?" Tags: Activism Ethics Language. Is it fair?

Here are some highlights: Mantle: "How do you respond to: Yeah, you may find something that benefits humans, but it's not worth it and it's not ethically right?" He then says he goes to "exceptional lengths" to make ensure the physical and psychological welfare of the primates he uses, "except when it's absolutely necessary" to harm them.

There is no philosophical continuum, but there is a psychological continuum, as evidenced by everyone at the workshop taking steps back or forward, denoting their increase in animal use (including no meat to meat, or backsliding, like I did a decade ago), or their decrease (such as when vegetarians go vegan). How about this?

New moral vegetarianism, however, rests on moral arguments couched in terms of human welfare. But it is not implausible to suppose that, for many people, going without meat will have less psychological meaning and consequently strengthen their resolve less than wearing buttons and signing petitions.
