For the Birds: Midway Atoll Mouse Eradication and NEPA

Because Midway is home to endangered species ( e.g. , Laysan Duck, Hawaiian Monk Seal), FWS must also comply with the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Midway’s birds are also protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. This will focus on the requirements of NEPA.

Dead Sea Lions in Puget Sound - Again

The animal protection group Seal Sitters says a necropsy showed that the sea lion had suffered a shark bite and had twisted intestines in addition to a bullet wound. KING says one of the Nisqually casualties was a Steller sea lion, protected under the Endangered Species Act. Investigators say they do not know who is responsible.

What is the National Bird of the United States?

Royal Shags and Tricky Parakeets: Birding Queen Charlotte Sound

In the early morning out on the water there were plenty of Fluttering Shearwaters and Australasian Gannets, and close to a salmon farm we found New Zealand Fur Seals as well as Pied Shags, Little Shags and Spotted Shags (I can only assume that kiwis just like calling all cormorants shags because they are all five years old).
