All the inhabited continents except Africa have experienced bird extinctions; however the 2012 update of the IUCN Red List shows a startling, but not altogether unexpected, trend in that more and more of our bird species are facing extinction. Guyana is probably most famous in birding circles for the unlikely discovery of a population of critically endangered Red Siskins in early 2000. Decades of trapping for the pet industry drove them to the brink of extinction, and their survival into the future was seriously in doubt.

There appear to be two main threats to this species; being accidentally hooked on fishing lines and in drift nets, and waters warming quicker than it can adapt to (hello climate crisis). If you do find a Blue-vented Hummingbird with a blue crown, you might rediscover a lost, critically endangered species.

I also really love the sea turtle, and the “petting” area where you can touch little sharks and rays. The other thing that I love about the aquarium is the section that has Utah endangered species! So it’s important that people can know about, and hopefully fall in love with, our endangered fish.
