To civilians who may have been puzzled by the wildlife crowd’s tossed-off references to peefas, modos or mice cubes, here is a beginner’s guide to Rehabberspeak. Raptor rehabbers feed our patients mostly thawed mice which, when frozen, are called either “mice cubes” or “mousesicles.” Here’s an example.

Failed to provide minimal enrichment for animals -- companionship for monkeys, balls for pigs, paper towels for mice -- to reduce emotional stress. In one case, up to 17 kittens from three litters died or were euthanized -- with no experiment data generated -- after injections to induce hydrocephalus. Certainly a case to follow.

Engber mentions that in 1972, the USDA put into place "a special exemption for rats, mice, and birds, allowing scientists to treat them however they saw fit—in cages of any size, in experiments with any degree of pain and suffering. And thanks to the efforts of groups such as PCRM, that ample use isn't so ample anymore.

I have a dog, cats (domestic and feral), birds raccoons, hawks, owls, coyotes, foxes, bunnies and mice…they all share the yard and the woods. Third: Science can’t trump emotion (wasn’t that the eternal issue between Kirk and Spock), you’re going to have to keep that in mind when talking with pro feral cat people.
