The natural experiment must have been tried very infrequently, at least recently. But chimpanzees can abstract. They have certainly committed no crimes.

I couldn’t help thinking this–me, the anthropomorphism hater– as I watched a pair of Philippine Eagles tend their nest, raise a chick, and tear monkeys apart in Bird of Prey: The Story of the Rarest Eagle on Earth , a well-crafted, beautifully filmed documentary with a mission. The Philippine Eagle has a kind face.

It toyed with my emotions for many minutes before it eventually flew off. The underside of the bird’s wings held all the information – it’s uniform grey/brown on Wilson’s but mixed with white for South American. How can one not love that face? After having a sip of some water, just before disappearing.

A that point in time, I could not imagine the adventure that I was going to experience and how birds would have rescued me. We had no information when the border would re-opened – perhaps within 2 days or perhaps within 5 weeks. On February 3, our plane landed in Nanning. We were trapped like birds in a cage.
