They look crap but presumably offer some protection for the chicks, though not from each other (see the murderous activities within the nests in my previous post ). A kingfisher with a somewhat deficient work ethic, I guess. Blue-throated Bee-eaters build nests on sticks sticking out of the water. Or speluncaphobia? Back to birds.

Second, reading about birds courting and parenting brings out the tendency to identify, which leads directly to anthropomorphism, the tendency to assign birds human emotions and thoughts. Some people love books like that. Think of birds too much as humans and you lose the specialness that makes them birds.
