Big Whoop, Indeed: Whooping Cranes in Louisiana!

For the first time in 75 years, a pair has successfully nested in Louisiana , producing not one but two fuzzy, wild-born chicks. Louisiana’s last wild Whoopers disappeared just after World War II. A pair from the released batch set up housekeeping last month and lo and behold, eggs gave way to chicks.

Spoon-billed Sandpiper Baby Boom … in Great Britain?

First, wildlife officials in Louisiana announced the first successful wild Whooping Crane nest in that state since 1939. Two different females among the captive group have laid eggs , and scientists are keeping a watchful eye on a few others. It’s a bang-up breeding year for super-endangered birds! Birds Suffering from Oil Spill

Several pelicans were coated in oil on Barataria Bay off Louisiana, their usually brown and white feathers now jet black. Pelican eggs were glazed with rust-colored gunk, and new hatchlings and nests were also coated with crude. Pelicans unable to fly due to being coated with oil. It's the Exxon Valdez all over again.

At least it made for a sunny Easter egg hunt… Get to Esopus Bend Nature Preserve. Now that is a bird that I had missed over our seemingly never-ending winter! It is a great little preserve and well worth a visit. Yeah, I am that much of an obsessive, thanks to the wonders of eBird.
