Birding Honduras–The Cryptic Birds

Honduras was finally a reality. Excellent 10,000 Birds posts have been written about Pico Bonito and Honduras by Corey and Carlos , so I’m going to focus on some of my most memorable experiences. Double-striped Thick-Knee nests are shallow depressions in the ground, with a typical clutch of two eggs. And lots of greenery.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of June 2018)

10,000 Birds

These thoughts crossed my mind as I returned from a week of birding bliss as a guest of the Honduras Institute of Tourism. The Tern colonies in Queens didn’t produce anything but the expected species but Gull-billed Terns , Corey’s first of the year, were a pleasure to see loafing on a mudflat at Big Egg Marsh. The Green Iguana (Iguana iguana)

The female of the species lays ten to thirty eggs in a burrow she digs about 65 days after mating. The eggs hatch sometime between 70 and 120 days later and the young emerge, looking much like they will look as adults, but smaller (though some populations have different-colored young).

Honduras , Malaysia and the southern-most bits of South Africa feature large this month with Mike, Duncan and Tom all vying to be MVB for June.
