Bowerbirds are a unique family of birds found only in Australia and New Guinea. She makes the nest, incubates the eggs and feeds the young solo. A little while ago I watched a National Geographic documentary, about the Birds of Paradise and it claimed, in its introduction, that all such species were found in New Guinea.

In this system, females mate and lay eggs with multiple males over the course of a breeding season, leaving males to incubate the eggs and raise the chicks. A single female often lays a clutch of eggs sired by multiple males, and multiple males will in turn help care for the chicks once they hatch (Briskie 1992, 2009, Briskie et al.

I can’t help wondering if the conspicuousness of the bird I saw was an attempt to draw attention to itself to distract the Grey Warbler while the other laid her eggs. Other cuckoos do use distraction in this way, but I don’t know in this case. Looking around. Facing me with a wing stretch. Note the contrasting stripey belly.

African Harrier-Hawks, snakes and other predators frequently raid weaver colonies to rob the nests of eggs and chicks. Shore Plover by Duncan Wright Adam couldn’t choose just one: I must admit I’m a sucker for big, colorful, showy birds and although New Guinea rightly claims the prize in this category, I haven’t had the privilege of journeying to that magical island this year, so for my bird of the year I have chosen Cock-of-the-rock.
