The species is classified as Near Threatened for all the usual depressing reasons – pollution, drainage, hunting, and the collection of eggs and nestlings ( source ). They are also quite catholic (sorry, I really like this word) in their prey selection, feeding on 17 different species of fish and prawn in the study cited above.

By year three, the adults were practicing the eagle equivalent of human “hover parenting.” It really looked like a game of tag. As the weaker juvenile became stronger, its flight mentor stepped up the game, though I didn’t realize it at first.

The Bank Swallow was listed as a threatened species in California in 1989 by the California Fish and Game Commission and the number of breeding pairs has declined steadily since then. The main reason for this rapid decline, as in the case of most species, is loss of habitat.

And it limits you in that you can't just go anywhere to watch a football game if you plan to eat anything. Who ever heard of a cupcake without eggs and butter in it? How do they know what's right? And what are they living their lives for? Also, veganism is expensive, and I'm on a budget. It's all too high maintenance.

I used to play Subbuteo as a kid … a kind of tip-kick football game that was named after this species (apparently, the inventors first wanted to name the game “Hobby” but that was rejected as too generic, or so the story goes). Thank god that this does not apply to humans.
