We have never had a pair succeed in raising all of their chicks and even to succeed in raising one takes a lot of effort because they are so dependent on their parents. Pied Oystercatcher chicks sheltering under their parents wings. They also appear to take more risks as they develop and this can be to their detriment.

Eagle-eyed Pat spotted a Lesser Black-backed Gull in nonbreeding plumage and other birders that week noted a Thayer’s Gull (which we may have seen too–I mean, who expects Iceland Gull in April?). Many birders left at the first drops, but I crowded with a few other birders under the shelter of the volunteer kiosk.
