A Near Conjunction

A massive shadow caught our eye on the opposite end, by the time we whispered “ Black Hawk-Eagle ” to each other it already was in view almost overhead. It glared at something in the leaf litter (is there any other way raptors look at anything?) Definitely a hawk-eagle, but which? Believe me, we tried!

Rufous Treecreepers

Rufous Treecreeper feeding among the leaf litter. At the top of Devil’s Slide we had a close encounter with a pair of Peregrine Falcons and there were also a pair of Wedge-tailed Eagles soaring over the National Park.

My Top Ten Birds of 2016 (or, Let’s Remember the Good Things about 2016)

1) Dusky Eagle-Owl. There’s a lot of good birding to be done at the Taj Mahal: Rose-Ringed Parakeets and Red-vented Bulbuls on the grounds; Painted Storks and Pied Avocets along the Yumana River, seen from the Taj terrace; Booted Eagles and Black Kites flying overhead. 2) Plum-headed Parakeet. 4) Small Pratincole.

Birding In Low Places

A marsh littered with garbage will still provide refuge for a bittern, considering in many places most wetlands simply don’t exist any more. This area was packed with birds, with more Golden Eagles than I’ve seen anywhere else at sea level. I think you get my point. Pacific Commons Park, Fremont, CA.

Birding in Costa Rica Off the Beaten Track at Hitoy Cerere

For example, the leaf litter didn’t look as dry as other places, and I noticed a fair number of frogs, insects, and small lizards in the understory. Although raptors seem scarce at Hitoy, I wouldn’t be surprised if Harpy Eagle lurks in the reserve, especially the remote interior sectors where no one treads.

Updates and Corrections

Animal Person

Little Black is in a large dog kennel, curled up in her litter box, going nowhere near her tasty, stinky canned food, and she will be returned tomorrow. As for the eagle's nest, I think all of the people who surround the nest each morning are mistaken. I'm still not satisfied with the photo of her, and I might try again.
