To wit: In an experiment informally called the “Cheetos Challenge,” a scientist investigated whether magpies or crows would be quicker to develop a taste for Cheetos—and which birds would ultimately steal them from the others.

Even to the author of the paper, who cautiously adds that “nest architecture is unlikely to be irrelevant to females, and its role deserves further investigation” (if swear words were allowed on 10,000 Birds, I would say that he is trying to cover his ass). It very effectively forms a small foraging group in this manner.

Spotlight: Lisa Beth Acton, Raising Ravens

She has a captive-bred education bird named Xena, a Eurasian Eagle Owl. We would close the flight around 10 PM to protect them from predators, then we’d get up at four in the morning to open the door again. They immediately went to investigate it, and quickly learned to move when cars were coming. Release day came. It was great!

Faithful Loons and Human Lunacy

A good way up one of the tallest pines is an Eagle’s nest. Every year there manage to be two eagles up there in that nest. Ducks are easier prey for the Eagle. You can tell when the Eagle is aloft because the Loons alarm call. Every now and then you see an Eagle and a Loon interact a bit. Plus hungry offspring.
