First birds came in the form of migrants and resident species that live in an oasis of precious green space near home. Those kept me below the 700 species threshhold but I won’t complain about 691 species. 48 Hummingbird Species. I also saw a high percentage of the raptor species possible in Costa Rica.

And while we’re at it, I think it’s time to open a limited season on Bald Eagles. We’ve always hunted Bald Eagles. I get it now, I really do.

In the grass, Desert and Isabelline Wheatears await us, together with Tawny Pipits and large flocks of Greater Short-toed Larks ; while Booted Eagle , Lesser Kestrel and even one Critically Endangered White-rumped Vulture fly above us. After my trip, I followed the news of this species closely. And the animals themselves?

Our bogey or nemesis species, birds that we would opt to see over others. Back in the early days of birding with optics, I wonder if such wanted species would have been birds that were much more common in present times. Bald Eagle. No matter where or when we bird, we have our targets. I’ll start with some global ones.

At the far end of the lake stands a tall, dry tree with an eagle that we are struggling to determine and it remains a dark silhouette far too far. Somewhere below that mysterious eagle, at the far shore of the lake, lies one Bengal Tiger … and further to the right – two more! He has earned his tip.

ALWAYS assume there is some other bird species in there that you have not found yet. Here is a flock of endangered species. Ross Perot once said “Eagles don’t flock, you have to find them one at a time.” Could a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper be mixed in with that flock of Pectorals ? Lake Merritt, Oakland, CA.
