I was at the Blue Heron Wetlands in Titusville, Florida, during the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival hoping to connect with a Purple Gallinule that the field trip I co-led with Laura Erickson failed to find. I knew that I could count the introduced Muscovy Ducks in front of me but did I want to? And why is it still there?

That will be the opening day of the 18th Annual Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Titusville, Florida. Ditto for the feral Muscovy Ducks , though they are a bit less nice. Ever since I met Julie in Honduras back in 2009 I have wanted to get out birding with her again. I certainly can’t wait for 21 January 2015!

So, if you are going to write a field guide on the birds of the countries south and east of Mexico–Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras—it makes the utmost sense that you embrace the whole geographic area. It has been a long time between field guides for most of these countries.

Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge, 15 March 2009 It was at about 1:30 AM on Saturday morning that I startled awake and found myself sitting in an empty subway car in an unfamiliar location. Dabbling ducks included Green-winged Teal , Northern Pintail , American Black Duck , and Mallard. But we weren’t done yet!
