Even people with no other interest in wildlife, who couldn’t tell a sparrow from an ostrich (or even a dolphin from a fish) love dolphins. Dolphins are basically just smart sharks that breath air. Now don’t get me wrong, I like dolphins. And dolphins can do bad things.

It took me awhile, but I managed to get on quite a few, especially when the boat slowed down to go check out some Humpback Whales and a huge number of Common Dolphins. We estimated at least 3,500 sooties and over 1,000 dolphins. It was truly an amazing experience only lessened by the fact that Desi slept through the whole thing.

This time I’ll be working with Wildlife ACT in Zululand, helping that NGO monitor wildlife in a range of reserves and parks in the east of South Africa. I bring this up not to boast (well, not much) but because I think that this approach to wildlife travel is somewhat neglected in birding circles.

Six species of baleen whales (the most abundant – Minke , also Blue , Fin , Humpback , Sei and Dwarf Minke ) have been recorded in the Ross Sea region, together with six species of toothed whales (the most abundant – Orca , also Sperm , Arnoux’s Beaked , Southern Bottlenose , Long-finned Pilot Whales and Hourglass Dolphin ).
