Even people with no other interest in wildlife, who couldn’t tell a sparrow from an ostrich (or even a dolphin from a fish) love dolphins. Dolphins are basically just smart sharks that breath air. Now don’t get me wrong, I like dolphins. And dolphins can do bad things.

Galápagos: A Natural History, Second Edition by John Kricher and Kevin Loughlin gives the traveling naturalist the tools needed to fully appreciate and experience the Galápagos Islands. Where once there were 13 species of “Darwin’s finches,” there are now 17. I wish I had read this book.

One of their most unique qualities is their self-awareness, which is a sign of higher cognitive abilities that are usually reserved for humans and a few other species. Most animals, including dogs and cats, cannot recognize themselves in a mirror, but a few species can, including chimpanzees, dolphins, and elephants.

Volunteering provides a very different experience to tourism though. In the Bahamas I swam in a pod of feeding dolphins. You may not get the species counts that the race delivers, but you’ll have memories burned into your skull. And come the new year I’ll be telling you all about my experiences this time around.

No, Madagascar is the most famous for an endemic group of mammals: lemurs, sifakas, indri, aye-aye – in total, 112 endemic species and subspecies of lemurs alone! Still, there should be no problem with larger species that allow for longer observation time (e.g. Larger species, that is, excluding dolphins and whales.
