Don’t assume your dog is tick-free just because you can’t readily see one. You may not spend much time outdoors, but if your dog does, then you can get a tick, too. Above all, check your dog for ticks frequently. They can resemble freckles, moles or even specks of dirt. Also, they can hide behind floppy ears or in long fur.

I can certainly speak about the Midwest where states like Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, etc. Ferruginous Hawks are native to our western short-grass prairies and their diet comprises almost completely of prairie dogs. Perhaps, this is because we, as Americans, have destroyed nearly every morsel of prairie we have left.

Recently it has also been documented as breeding in Wisconsin, Ontario, and the Upper Michigan Peninsula, but those birds are few and not always accessible. So if you want to see a Kirtland’s Warbler, you go to Michigan in May or June.

Every western dove and flycatcher that turns up along our wind-swept coast came there from somewhere; every alcid that somehow makes it to Wisconsin likewise, but in reverse. People walk their dogs and do yoga there. It’s not an original thought that there must be other parks out there that hide treasures.
