What makes a Great Patch?

Just about every species of bird that had ever been found in the Triangle of North Carolina had been seen at some time or another at Mason Farm. Dogs were not allowed. Over my many years and many visits, I’d racked up well over 130 species there, 28 of which were warblers.

A Patch for Every Birder, and for Every Birder a Patch

I’ve written before about by ongoing quest to find a new patch in new home of Greensboro, North Carolina, and my more or less failed attempt thus far in turning up anything of note. Sure, they were all one species, but the place was immediately birdy. There aren’t that meany people, and even fewer dogs.

New Place in Costa Rica, New Yard List

Although it was nothing like going from New York to California or even Buffalo, New York to North Carolina, a change of location, however slight, can bring new birds especially in Costa Rica. They shared the bushes with three of Costa Rica’s common flycatcher species, each nearly as vocal as the blackbirds. Right at home.

Catching the End of Migration on the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail

It’s actually a really great demonstration of the power of these trails to get people outside; in the three hours we were walking, we saw countless bicyclists, boy scout groups, dog walkers, joggers, and more. I was thirsting for some of the species I hadn’t seen yet, and I knew my window was closing for 2015.

A Day in Anchorage

The Anchorage area hosts a number of far norther species I could never hope to see in North Carolina, and I quickly pulled together a list of targets and my friends made a plan. When a pair of walkers with a dog came down the path, however, it paused to look them over. What an incredible experience.
