Jonathan Safran Foer's pup-in-cheek essay " Let Them Eat Dog " (Weekend Journal, Oct. A decision not to eat dogs has nothing to do with our inherent hypocrisy, but with our relationship to different animals. Dogs were bred to be companion animals; pigs and cows are raised as food. We carnivores have to become more benevolent.

Many people exclude animals from moral consideration, even though they would never think to neglect, much less harm, a dog or a cat. Have you visited a factory farm or a slaughterhouse? So I must try to keep my morality open to revision, exposing it to whatever valid pressures there are—including pressures from my sympathies.

We "traditionally" have applied our social mores in some places and not others, and we should go back to "tradition," which I bet has something to do with continuing to care about our dogs while continuing to feign care for "farm animals," as they're value is as food only. I have always felt a sense of connection to animals since as far back as I can remember, and the current manner in which they are treated in factory farms disturbs me. I do not believe that the current factory farm system in place lives up to both of those standards.
