The individual I am pictured holding ( above ) was a friendly bird that (rather like a dog) seemed happy to be handled.

There are many stories at Dunrovin – rescued horses, challenging dogs, miniature donkeys with flamboyant personalities – but two of the stars are a pair of Osprey s dubbed Ozzie and Harriet. This is my first season with the ranch, and I’m very excited to being putting some of my theories about nest cams into practice.

Pied Oystercatcher broken wing display

The first eggs are laid during the first week of July each year and if these eggs fail to hatch or the chicks are lost they will lay further eggs within a few weeks. Sadly a lot of eggs are lost to feral cats and chicks are sometimes taken by birds of prey. Nest site with 3 eggs-one white!

Pied Oystercatcher parenting

After 28 days of sharing the duty of sitting on three eggs we finally had the arrival of our first Pied Oystercatcher chicks for 2012 on Friday August 3rd. It is unusual for three eggs to be laid here in Broome and many eggs do not even hatch due to predation each season.

Feral Cats Are An Invasive Species in North America (and elsewhere)

I once knew a guy who kept and raised cats. Dogs are similarly dispersed across size ranges, with Foxes, Coyotes, and Wolves taking prey across different parts of the size range. But they don’t live in North America. Unless we put them there. Have you ever seen the Dryfus Lion? That was one of his cats. Plus, Coyotes eat Cats.

It has been a humbling 17 days as I walk the dogs early, shower, and get gussied up to sit in traffic for 1.5 Imagine if kids in 4-H were taught how to raise dogs for dogfighting (not a perfect analogy, I know). Trying to program kids to accept the killing of someone they love is cruel.
