Local guide and birder David Mora Vargas has been spending much of his time at his family’s farm in the Sarapiqui lowlands. As it learns to hunt and live on its own, the young bird has taken up residence in a tree right in front of the farm. Check it out: Juvenile Tiny Hawk Show in Sarapiqui.

So, Yellow Rail is included (2 dead birds and one live one are documented for the study area), but Ash-throated Flycatcher, a vagrant found in areas nearby as well as in Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Long Island, but not in the study area, is not. . This is a project that clearly spanned decades. It’s a very mixed chapter.

Not a great place for a family vacation, though I think Duncan will disagree. Phillipps’ Field Guide (I’ll be using this shortened form of the title) covers 673 avian species, including 59 endemics, and 53 species that have not been documented yet for the area but which may show up in the next few years.

Think about it–how do you document the behavior of birds that spend years flying (or swimming) and feeding and, apparently, sleeping above or within the deep sea? They walk and toboggan to open water about 50 miles away and then hunt for food until it is time to come home and feed the chick. Who is it for?

The species are taxonomically divided into two families: Tytonidae, Barn-Owls, and Strigidae, Owls, encompassed in one order, Strigiformes. They are also hunted. When you look at Clements latest taxonomic spreadsheet, you get a sense of the depth of their relationships to each other and the world. It’s a lot of work.
