We sing about them, we paint them, we use them as mythic and poetic symbols for our spiritual and emotional feelings, we wear them in myriad and often colorful ways, we adopt them as household pets. Reference books are supposed to be full of documentable facts, not stories from people without a PhD next to their name.

The Jewel Hunter: A Book Review About One Birder’s Quest for Pittas and Beer

Some of his finds are the first documented records of the bird in that area or the first decent photograph of a little-known species. On the other hand, Phoebe Snetsinger’s memoir, Birding on Borrowed Time , becomes tedious because of her lack of emotional disclosure. The Jewel Hunter can be frustrating in this respect.

Best Bird of the Year 2012

It was a heart-pounding scene straight out of Jurassic Park, an odd experience for a laid-back pursuit like birding. This bird represented only the second documented record of this species in Florida. I wrote about the experience here. Australian Owlet-nightjar by Clare Morton Jochen chose a bird that everyone can appreciate.
