In Australia we definitely have our fair share of invasive species and the main problem is that we are such a huge land mass with such a small population. Feral cats have been able to adapt very well in Australia and have grown larger over the years and can survive in areas that you would not expect.

Pied Oystercatcher chicks two weeks on….

There are still very real threats of predation by feral cats and birds of prey, but we just have to be optimistic. It is definitely time for a successful breeding season for at least one pair this year.

Are Women More Compassionate Than Men?

All I know is that the majority of vegetarians, ex-vegetarians, animal rights supporters, animal rescuers, animal shelter volunteers, and feral cat colony stewards that I know are women. That doesn't mean that I don't know thoughtful men who think about these issues, just that I've noticed the tendencies are definitely lopsided.

What would birding be without the prospect of twitching the occassional vagrant, which is by definition an uninvited, though in these cases welcome, guest. One wonders how innocent the Spotted Owl finds the rampant range expansion of the Barred Owl. Perhaps our outrage at invasive species can be a bit hypocritical at times.

More nesting and a marine mystery

Red-capped Plover nest with 2 eggs The Pied Oystercatchers that laid the first eggs this year have successfully got their chicks through the first week, though from the footprints one is definitely a lot lighter in weight than the other. We have never seen two survive and the success of even one is remote.

Well that depends on several factors, the most important of which are the definitions of the terms “remote” and “endemic” My subjective thoughts on remoteness are that the term should be defined by two factors: 1. Its numbers are declining rapidly due to feral cats and this duck is currently listed as vulnerable.
