I received an e-mail from the well-meaning Wendy at Compassion in World Farming (which I find an odd combination of words) regarding Egypt's pig cull and asking me to send my protest to the Egyptian Government. Do the people who are so upset about the pig cull in Egypt realize that the pig cull happens every day, all around the world?

The grazers are glorified farm animals, but they have been labelled by some very irresponsible people as “wild”. Nowadays, the numbers are being controlled through culling. The animals themselves identified as “civilised” and started a hunger strike in protest. Actually, no, they just starved to death for lack of care. It was awful.

We've argued in previous posts that factory farming is simply not conducive to animal welfare. I'm not arguing about the methods as I'm not a veterinarian, but it's a good example of the clinical discussion of costs when it comes to managing farm animal health. They are a commensal species, meaning that they are a wild animal that lives in close association with humans, not as a pet or as a farm animal but more like a parasite, to the extent that it is hard to find them in truely wild settings, and it is hard to find human settlements without them.

The animal rights movement is (rightly) closely associated with protesting things like factory farming, dogfighting, etc…basically, the mistreatment of animals. What’s even more frustrating is when animal rights people learn of plans to cull nonnative species. This makes perfect sense.
