In fact, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 5 to 7 million pets are taken into animal shelters in the U.S. Vet visits – Some foster pets will have had very poor nutrition or certain medical conditions that have not been properly addressed depending on the circumstances from where they came.

I had never heard of the use of ferrets in medical research though. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine claims these are unnecessary procedures, even though the ferrets are apparently anesthesized during the process. I live in Seattle and I am always skeptical of how the UW treats its lab animals. News to me.
