Many people support this, particularly affluent types, who have become dog and cat people and now own them as "pets." Or if it's brutal it is necessary.

Thankfully the days of visiting Africa purely for slaughtering its wildlife have mostly come to a merciful end, and safari operators have adopted the Big Five term to market tours that offer sightings of the fortunate remanants of Africa’s once teeming great herds. In Asia they are even commonly kept as pets!

Since the male offspring of dairy cows don't produce milk, they are sold to veal farms, where they are permanently confined in veal crates that prevent them from moving or turning around. I replaced cow's milk with soy milk. These birds are some of the most abused animals in agriculture.

April 21, 2008 To the Editor: Re “ Million-Dollar Meat ” (editorial, April 23): In vitro meat might not appeal to everyone, but I am guessing that the day PETA awards its prize money will be a happy day for the billions of land animals bound for slaughter. More than nine billion chickens are slaughtered each year in the United States.

Cows, domestic sheep, chickens and many others would not survive if they were not raised for human consumption, protected from malnutrition, disease and predators. We have a tendency as a society to anthropomorphize our animals, especially our pets. None of this is objectionable; our pets provide us with a tremendous amount of love, companionship and joy and deserve the best care we can give them. We give them human names and provide them with the same amenities we enjoy as humans.
