THE DUTCH parliament has voted overwhelmingly to ban the ritual slaughter of livestock. Dutch law requires animals to be stunned before slaughter, but has long allowed an exemption for Muslims and orthodox Jews, who can legally butcher animals according to their centuries-old dietary rules. He asked whether cows, chickens, sheep and some of the other animals that we eat are usually treated and killed in a humane manner. For some people, it is inhumane to eat meat in any situation, no matter how well the animal is treated prior to and during slaughter. Livestock don’t contribute to campaigns, but agribusiness does.
