My husband has two friends (a male/female couple) who are transitioning from vegetarian to vegan and I also have two friends (both women) who are transitioning from omnivore and all are dreading Thanksgiving. The conversations with family and friends have already begun about "Turkey Day." Not humans, not animals."

He was adopted by the Masson family and was apparently the most loving dog all who met him had ever had the pleasure of being licked by. I'm not one of those people who thinks family is composed of only humans or humans who are biologically related. The idea of family is currently being used by the dairy industry in a series of commercials with the tag line: "99% of dairy farms are family owned." Ninety-nine percent of dairy farms are family owned.

But the cow part? The irony of the cow part is that much of this Oprah show was about slavery. Human slavery, of course. The irony of the inclusion of the cow in The Girl Effect is that it swaps one form of slavery for another. And 99% of the population (as in, 1%, I believe, are vegans) doesn't care. Sex slavery.

Vegan vegetarians who eat only vegetables, fruit, and nuts do not completely remove all microorganisms from their food, even with repeated cleaning. If someone’s sole reason for abstaining from meat were pain-avoidance, then there would be no reason not to eat these cows. Why should microorganisms be sacrificed rather than humans?

On Friday, June 25, I received a call from an attorney who said a little girl was born the evening prior, her adoption fell through and she needed a family. Because we planned to adopt I had been researching eco-friendly, vegan nursery items but had yet to purchase a thing. And on Sunday, June 27, we brought her home!
