SeaWorld vets removed the gasket, and happened to rescue, during the bird’s rehabilitation, a newly hatched Sandhill chick. Rather than risk the chick’s imprinting on humans, the team cleverly thought to pair their two charges. Like I said, I may not be a big fan of this kind of operation (are you?)

Ipsen of Payson Family Pet Hospital in Payson, Utah, is our wildlife vet and very skilled at orthopedic surgeries. He has been our vet for many years and sees many of our patients in need of surgery. With human patients, it’s easy – you put them in a hospital bed and tell them to ‘stay still.’

Of course, that also rendered her defective and she was therefore immediately "discarded." Diabetes shortens the life expectancy of human and nonhuman animals, by years. Then there's her hideous gum disease that has left her few remaining teeth in bad shape but without much to do for them (the vets won't touch them).

Turns out the founder of TRC and many the vets who worked in clinic were falconers as well. Falconers must always keep their birds somewhat wild so if they get separated or the bird flies off never to return, it can still survive on it’s own without human intervention. Of course I can’t speak for every falconer out there.

One paper describes them breeding in a human settlement in abandoned clay jars. Of course, their own mother is not the only threat to Wreathed Hornbill individuals. While being a vet certainly has its attractions, including possibly not having to deal with people too much, the names of these diseases sound somewhat off-putting.
