The Collective added six new states in the past three years, but none have eclipsed the century mark: Wisconsin ( 74 ), Utah (55), Hawaii (38), Oklahoma (18), Rhode Island (9), and Connecticut (5). For example, my list of the Top 25 National Wildlife Refuges for birding includes an excellent location in Minnesota ( Minnesota Valley NWR ).

Federal Public Lands: Pacific Seabirds

Because these lands include a variety of different habitats and range from Alaska to Puerto Rico and Hawaii to Maine, it is difficult to make generalizations about their impact on birds. But if one focuses on specific types of birds, the results can be both illuminating and surprising. The target birds tend to be similar.
