I imagine part of the allure of studying mushrooms is the tension between identifying the ones that will kill you (or at the very least give you a tummy ache) and the ones that will make your pizza or salad zing.

The Mysterious Starling – “Killed Hopping About in a Tree”

Midafternoon on 9 August 1825, Andrew Bloxam, the naturalist on the HMS Blonde, shot a starling on Mauke, an island in the Cook Islands. Olson who in 1986 published a paper describing his experience finding, reading, and researching Bloxam’s original notes. This fact alone is not at all surprising. L 7 1/2 inch. What a horror!

The whole human-caused extinction of megafauna, in Australia and elsewhere, is a dynamic area of research and things change all the time.
