It is still volcanically active with researchers periodically discovering new flows.

I imagine part of the allure of studying mushrooms is the tension between identifying the ones that will kill you (or at the very least give you a tummy ache) and the ones that will make your pizza or salad zing.

Midafternoon on 9 August 1825, Andrew Bloxam, the naturalist on the HMS Blonde, shot a starling on Mauke, an island in the Cook Islands. Olson who in 1986 published a paper describing his experience finding, reading, and researching Bloxam’s original notes. This fact alone is not at all surprising. L 7 1/2 inch. What a horror!

Genyornis newtoni lived in Australia, and recent research suggests that humans may have played a role in the extinction of this dinosaur laughingly called a bird, about 40,000 years ago. The whole human-caused extinction of megafauna, in Australia and elsewhere, is a dynamic area of research and things change all the time.

The Crested Serpent-eagle is not a vulture, but that does not keep me from mentioning a recent Economist article here, “The sudden demise of Indian vultures killed thousands of people” And while this article is behind a paywall, the original research paper is not.

He clearly thinks that it is wrong to cause animals to suffer unnecessarily, but he appears to be somewhat ambivalent about killing animals (provided the killing is carried out humanely). However, the above rationalization does not directly address the issue of contributing to the unnecessary killing of a conscious sentient being.

Chinese researchers have actually been able to identify individual Asian Stubtails on the basis of their songs ( source ). It seems that a lot of ornithological research is based on thinking about what makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint, and then checking whether this actually the case. Most likely, this is a Common Cuckoo.
