The gulls that spent months attacking any human on the place are content to loaf around and ignore you. Visiting this area for the first time after seeing it for month was a crazy experience. The seas were glass still, and far out we could see whales, dozens of the things. Mostly Humpback Whales , but also Blue Whales.

Offshore Sea Life ID Guide: West Coast is designed to be a quick, handy resource for use on whale watching and one-day pelagic trips. I was impressed with book’s design and content. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction to the group and a table of contents of subgroups that includes brief but key descriptions.

It is acceptable to point out other sea creatures–dolphins or whales or dragonflies–but the main goal is the observation and identification of the birds. They tell us, in the absence of a table of contents for the individual accounts, when one account has ended and another started. It is a challenging activity.
