Some hummingbirds get off course–perhaps a young bird is hatched with an odd internal compass or has hit a window one too many times and heads east or north instead of south with the rest of the gang and you get odd ducks showing up in unexpected areas. Animal rights group Compassion Over Killing was the first to uncover the alleged systematic slaughter of healthy dairy cows in California. Berman said all milk products - everything from cheese to butter - got more expensive. The class-action lawsuit accuses companies of slaughtering thousands of cows just to decrease supply.

The main difference is that Foer doesn't eat meat (though he does, as it turns out, eat some animal products) and he challenges the cultural assumptions that tell us that some animals are for petting and some are for eating. Compassion, as most people define it, is virtuous, but it smacks of mercy, which screams subjection.

Kristof, who takes note of the trend represented by the animal welfare proposition on the ballot in California this fall. I look forward to casting my vote for compassion. But compassion and civil sense from the large farm entrepreneurs might be more helpful. I grew up on a dairy and hog farm in central Massachusetts.
