It spotlights the Humane Society, but I think it's a pretty universal comparison. Tags: corporate lies humane society agriculture agribusiness. This article pretty much sums up how the two agendas are simply at cross-purposes. Compassion is perceived to hurt profits.

Baby birds are cuteness personified, possibly even more so than other baby animals, including human babies, and pose interesting questions of survival and development. Baby birds may be separated from the nest and their parents because of natural occurrences (violent weather, floods) or unknowing human interference or predators.

Bea sent me a link to an article in Gourmet called " Humane Slaughterhouses ," by Rebecca Marx, that is absurd. They believe you can take a life that doesn't want to be taken in a humane way, and I don't agree. It’s how we treat humans, too. For him, the importance of humane slaughter manifests itself in the quality of the meat."

If animals have rights, then these are welfare rather than option-rights. However, we do speak of the rights of such persons—their welfare-rights. Whether animals have welfare-rights depends upon the very perplexing question, which I shall not discuss, of their inclusion in the community and their relation to the social ideal.

The ground for this will not be animal welfare, as you might expect, but environmentalism. It will be said that animal husbandry is one of the most inefficient and destructive industries on the planet, and that the planet cannot survive unless humans change their diets. Individual animals, qua sentient beings, have intrinsic value.
