The nation of Colombia has been the victim of some bad press over the last few decades, not all of this is entirely unjustified. The government of Colombia was involved in a long-simmering and occasionally boiling war with guerilla groups in the rural parts of the country. Proud of their nation of music and color and art.

What happens when you visit one of the best birdwatching sites in the region with the highest number of endemic bird species in the Americas in the world’s birdiest country? How else can I describe two days at Cerro Montezuma in Colombia. This, of course, was a great boon for our group. Your mind gets blown.

It was easy enough to participate, all anyone had to do was watch birds and record the number of species identified using eBird. Fortunately, they were able to extract themselves to eventually get the highest total for the day in Costa Rica, 230 plus species. We logged an awesome 225 species! More than 680 species identified!

The lure of an staggering number of species at a particular location is a draw for many people. In fact, the number of “heard only” annotations next to a species names is more frequent in bird list resulting from rainforest birding than birding in any other habitat type. Birding in the Amazon Rainforest has its pros and cons.

It is my best bird because it is just such an incredible species, and looking at it made me realize that I had temporarily stopped to fully appreciate birds during the stressful last few years. This year I watched them from the day they arrived , until two chicks successfully hatched, the northernmost breeding record for the species.

In 2012, I reviewed The Jewel Hunter , an absorbing narrative in which author Chris Goodie travelled throughout Asia, Africa, and Australasia to observe and photograph every Pitta species in the world. Hummingbird species, on the other hand, number in the hundreds.
