Although we don’t really have a chance to top the numbers of birds identified in mega birdy places like Peru, Colombia, or even Mexico, we still do our best to make it into the top ten and at least see if we can beat the record from the previous year. Next year will be even better.

Best Bird of the Year 2011

I photographed this Guianan Cock-of-the-rock at a lek site near Surama, deep in the rainforest zone of Guyana, and my incredible experience with Andean Cock-of-the-rocks was at a display lek on the edge of the town of Jardin, in the coffee-belt of Colombia, both just incredible birds that make the heart soar with joy!

Where America dreams of/goes birding?

The high position of Costa Rica comes as no surprise and yet, with more than one fifth of the total votes, I was a bit surprised how strong its 1st place is. Colombia was praised for its “amazing people, topography and biodiversity”.
