In the Orinoco, the largest observed groups number 30, but average is just above five. We sailed right into a group of more than a dozen Hoatzins (cover photo, by Tyler Ficker) with their orange mohawks and blue facial skin. Yet, we had a good two hours or almost 50 kilometres by 75 horse-powered speedboat to reach Inirida at sunset.

The horse is probably out of the barn on this plant anyway, as it has spread quite a bit, but I can see both sides of the argument. Collared Aracaris are weird for toucans in that they often travel in groups unlike other toucan species which are in general likely to be seen in ones or twos. You won’t regret it!

On the opposite bank, European pond terrapins are basking in the sun and, behind them, a herd of horses is grazing, preventing the scrub from taking over the grasslands. Near us, a bus stops and a group of about 30 Irish birders heavily armed with binoculars and scopes climb out… a sign for us to look for a more secluded spot.

The group’s name is in honor of the moths attracted to porch lights in evenings gone by, when storytellers would sit and tell tales on these porches.
