Freshly collected and en route to some R&R. It toyed with my emotions for many minutes before it eventually flew off. If the bird raises its wings, it’s likely flying – and good luck trying to get a good view of a flying snipe! A rehabber friend of mine sent me a photo of the bird asking for an ID.

Between staying warm/cool, finding food, avoiding predators, migrating thousands of miles every year, finding mates, raising chicks and doing all this at the mercy of the elements, it makes sense that they have more brainpower than just simple instinct to run on. Second, reading about birds courting and parenting brings out the tendency to identify, which leads directly to anthropomorphism, the tendency to assign birds human emotions and thoughts. American Crows live in extended families, with sons and daughters from previous years helping to raise the current brood. We simply refuse to squee.

David Sibley (yeah, the one ) recently raised the question visiting birders (particularly from Germany, not so much from the UK – I am told!) And consider collecting stamps or other indoor hobbies. North America may currently feel very smug, safe and sound. This may change.
