Coincidentally, last night was a board meeting for our homeowner's association, and though I wasn't on the agenda there's always time for homeowner comments about, say, the petting zoo and pony rides that are scheduled for the spring "BBQ" ( here 's part one of this story). And there's not much from the health angle for pony rides.

Even tougher though, was moving a bit further away and into an apartment complex that did not allow for me to own any pet other than a goldfish. I immediately signed up for the first training class. One of my favorite experiences was the chance to work with Shelby, a dog that was absolutely terrified of men. I was heartbroken.

Beloved family pet Dalmatian, Pepper, is stolen, and after several weeks of searching is discovered to have been experimented on at a hospital and died on the table when researchers tried to implant her with an experimental cardiac pacemaker. By the end of my time as researcher, I was performing behavioral experiments on humans.

One of Africa’s truly exhilarating experiences is watching and listening to a honking flock of these massive birds as they appear out of the early morning mists over a wetland, to land nearby and start their wing-flapping and jumping displays. She teaches anthropology at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, USA, and lives in Maryland with her husband and not nearly enough pets. I’ve hit an all-time low.
