It is an irony not lost on the Chinese public that the Year of the Tiger has not been good for the big cats. On Tuesday, state media reported that dozens of tigers and other endangered animals had died of malnutrition over the past two years at the Northern Forest Zoo in the Chinese city of Harbin.

That makes me a bit of an oddity here in China, where people share photos of their meals online and spend (by my rough estimate) about half of their lifetime talking and thinking about what to eat next. Little Egret: There is a shrimp farm by the seaside. Tiger Shrike. Black-capped Kingfisher. Very easy work. Cattle Egret.

A Tiger Shrike – as always – looks very stylish. Little Curlews are passing through Shanghai for a short time, taking the local sod farm as a surrogate for tundra. A Grey Night Jar does what it does best – being almost invisible.
