Understandably, after all the trouble of incubating the eggs. A Tiger Shrike – as always – looks very stylish. Meanwhile, Little Grebes are still in a slightly earlier phase. Little Ringed Plovers are fiercely protective of their cute chicks. A Grey Night Jar does what it does best – being almost invisible.

Birding Nanhui, Shanghai, in September 2021

Some other members of the shrike family were a bit less testosterone-driven at Nanhui – like this Bull-headed Shrike … … this rather attractive-looking Tiger Shrike … … or one of the many Brown Shrikes passing through Nanhui on migration. A happier shrike.

The Light-vented Bulbul used to be restricted to Southern China but has expanded its range in the past few decades. According to the HBW, the Chinese Grosbeak is “widely trapped for the cagebird trade in China” Shame on the trappers. We never forget that you, the reader, have a choice. Most likely, this is a Common Cuckoo.

The Large-billed Crow ( video ) is one of the natural enemies – in the study above, it predated 19 eggs from four pitta nests. The Lesser Coucal has a characteristic vocalization that can be heard in this video (along with the usual China-typical background noise – China is not a quiet place in general).
